What was your first really memorable movie?

April 11th 2008 13:47
I have vague recollections of my parents taking us to Disney movies at the drive-in when I was a kid but I remember the experience not the movies. I remember the speakers hanging on the windows of the cars (crap I just gave away my age) and watching them in my PJs and I may have no recollection of the movies we watched but I remember it was always fun and a huge treat. I do however remember the first movie I saw at the cinema without my parents, it was Live and Let Die.

It had a very cool theme song by Paul McCartney, a memorable scene with snakes and a plot I doubt I followed.. I must have gone with one of my older brothers because I can’t imagine my parents thinking that James Bond chasing drug dealers was suitable material for a small child but I loved the action and adventure of it. I didn’t have very discerning taste back then. Sorry to Bond fans but I really don’t like them at all – except for the new Casino Royale, Daniel Craig and Sean Connery were the only two decent Bonds.

But the first movie I really remember was Jaws. It scared the holy hell out me. I still hear that theme music in my head whenever I’m in the ocean. Once again I’m sure one of my brothers took me along because I know my mother wouldn’t have approved that one. After that I became obsessed with things that would give me chills and my viewing and reading habits took a very dark turn. When I reached my teens I was a horror movie and book freak, I couldn’t get enough. I still love a good scary movie every now and then but my taste for horror has dimmed. Now it’s my mum that drags me to horror films!

What was your first movie and did it shape your taste in later films? If not your first actual visit to the cinema what is the first movie that made a real impression on you?

seems ironic now that i find dragqueens and wigs so exciting! lol

Ammityville Horror scared the bejesus out of me.

Maybe that's where it all started, I'm sure there is something very Freudian there haha. Now Dustin made an ugly woman but I didn't think he was that scary!

I apparently snuck out of bed when my parents were watching a movie where a giant spider ate someone and I screamed my teeny tiny head off. I've been arachnaphobic ever since. I am scared - abandon the car in the middle of the road in traffic - shitless of them. I guess it could go either way, you either develop a fascination or a full blown terror

haha i can imagine you abandoning your car . . . troy unloaded about 6 cans of surface spray on an unsuspecting huntsman that crawled across the inside of my windscreen and refused to get off my car!

i think i was horrified by dustin because (as an 8 year old) it destroyed my naive sense of appearances being reality . . . how can a woman be a man? the tiny cogs in my brain went into overdrive . . . ive always liked the look of men with long hair too and i can trace that back to one of my dads friends coming into the house as a man in a hat and then he took of the hat and all this silky black hair unfurled and tumbled down his back . . . i think i was 6 . . . these are my "lightbulb" moments lol

The best movies were always at the drive-in. Those were the most memorable, fun and entertaining. Not the movie but the experiences.

So many years and so many movies, I've always liked comedies. But the movie that shaped my life in someway was The Exorcist. Scary when I saw it, not so much now. But after that experience, I pretty much never scare at horror movies that seem rather tame today.

There were a lot of memorable movies for me in my youth, E.T., the first Tennage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Annie but the one that really changed my life was the first Jurassic Park.

My first language is French and I learned to speak English by watching this movie at alternatively in French and English (that must give a clue to how many times I've seen it). Now, I don't really have a favorite type of movie but I only watch English/American movies in their first language even though I live in a largely francophone province. No one wants to go to the movies with me except my brother and my Anglo friends. The francophones don't know what they're missing.

Oh GOD - I can't remember which ones came first but it was huge for mum to take me into the cinema to watch Superman and the sequels at the George St complex. I also saw the Star Wars' there. And GUESS what - I still have the plastic promo coke cups from ALL of them. It was the big treat. But I also do remember one holidays while camping at the Basin a massive group of parents and kids caught transport to watch ET somewhere. And I remember sitting with the group of kids (probably 10 of us) and I got so bagged out for balling my eyes out. That movie just ripped my heart out!! Never forget it - those heartless non emotional idiot friends of mine!! LOL

Hatchy, you should see the Amityville Horror remake - lame! But I agree when it first came out it was chilling. Bleeding walls and scary voices. I think I pulled the covers over my head after that one.

Morgan, isn't it funny how somehow small things can have a big impact? I used to love long hair on men but now it kind of creeps me out. I think Fabio ruined it for me!

Signals, I really miss the drive-in. Kids today are missing that whole big family experience, there is nothing like it and when I was little the drive-in held much more excitement than the cinema. Horror movies pale into comparison today mainly because they rely on special effects for the thrills when the best scary movies are the ones that build atmosphere, not necessarily a bloodbath. I read the Exorcist when I was 14 and it was much scarier than the movie.

Ann, what a great way to learn a foreign language! Wow that takes commitment. It must add a whole new depth to the movies you watch. I love it! Maybe I should start watching my entire Buffy collection with the language changed to French so I can learn. I'm sure I would pick up quite a bit in 7 Seasons!

Jason, you are probably sitting on a gold mine with those promo cups! How cool that you kept them. I never had the foresight to do anything like that. Anyone that didn't cry in ET is heartless!! And how on earth did I forget about Star Wars, I loved the original so much.

Hi Cheryl J,

It was on my 5th birthday that I walked into Star Wars for the first time. I entered as a normal kid, I exited as the film obsessed nut that everyone now knows.

So George Lucas and co are responsible for John Doe 's lifelong love of all things film. Star Wars for your 5th birthday, that is extremely cool!

Hey Michaelie

Can't say I've ever had the pleasure of that one but I hope it wasn't as disturbing as Bambi, that one scarred me for life!

Oh Lord, you're all, like, young and stuff. My mum took me to Rosemary's Baby when I was a toddler ( my mum was a bit of a ditz) and she said I played happily until a scene where Rosemary screams, and I did too. I LOVE those retro films now. So, yes, Cheryl, I'd say you were spot on....I was very much formed by early experiences!

BTW JohnDoe - Star Wrs when you were 5 - I've totally got your number now!

Hi, Cheryl J,

it's really not that hard to use movies to learn other languages. All it takes is good memory and a movie/tv show that you know really well.

One of my "qualities," if you can call it that, is memorizing movie dialogs. I used to know 2/3 of Ocean's Eleven dialog by heart, now I only remember a couple of scenes since it's been a while that I've seen it. Other movies I memorized are The Lord of the Rings, Finding Nemo, Malibu's Most Wanted, some French comedies, etc. I'm a big movie junkie, so it's not really a matter of commitment, it's how my brain works.

Hi Alyson, you are not that old, trust me. Anyway you're only as old as you feel. I very vaguely remember the moon landing when I was a toddler!! Well not so much the landing itself but the excited vibe and I'm proud of that.

Rosemary's Baby was a classic and I recall being quite young when I saw it too although I'm sure it was on TV.

Ann, you are the Rainman of movies, and I mean that in the nicest possible way! I used to be able to remember dialogue but not so much now. You have inspired me to try watching something I know well in a foreign language and see what I can pick up along the way. Unfortunately I take pain medication which can really mess with my memory. I'm like a goldfish "Oooh look a castle" swim swim, "Ooh look a castle" haha

haha, love the goldfish comparison. Hey, I'm glad I inspired someone to do something. As for the Rainman comparison, most of my friends think I'm crazy and/or a freak while my brother calls me his personal "movie trivia encyclopedia" since I also know a lot about actors, directors, and film score composers so I don't really mind.

Hmm...this is toughie. Not because I've seen so many excellent movies (I'm trying to catch up!) but because my memory is rather poor. I'll have to say that "The Usual Suspects" was the first movie that had me appreciating the movie, and not cute guy in the lead role. The twist in the plotline at the end, and the way it kept you guessing...definitely the turning point for me when it came to the transisition from chick flick (which i still indulge in) to story-driven movies.

Awesome film choice May, The Usual Suspects was great. I've never really been a fan of chick movies, I think they are just too formulaic. That's not to say I don't enjoy any, there are many films that are classified as chick flicks that are brilliant.

My first memory of seeing a film was Disney's Fantasia... I remember the score to the movie and being entirely traumatized by "Night on Bald Mountain" ... oh the fear... it still lives with me now... Thank god for the toll of that damn church bell.
II don't know if it was that scene in Fantasia that made me start to appreciate the darker side of life... I am now a Tim Burton fan, anything Noir or slightly gritty is more my style.
Cheryl, I remember going to the Drive ins with my Mum at the Blacktown Drive Ins and I distinctly remember the speakers you hang on the window... good times...[/SIZE]

Shadow Dancer, if you love noir, you must go and visit Bruno on Cult Projections. His site is fabulous and he writes the most wonderful reviews. I think you'll love it!

The drive-in. Oh how I miss those! I wish they would spring up all over the place again. There is a whole generation of people missing out on that wonderful experience.
