Un-friending Facebook day numero cinco...

July 4th 2010 12:26
So, I did something sort of backwards today. A friend of mine from high school who had been part of the friend list uppercut, sent a message to re-friend me. (No, I didn't go to Facebook -- I get updates in my e-mail)

Anyway, I was so touched that this person, who never really said anything to me on Facebook by the way, actually noticed we were no longer friends and requested a friendship renewal -- so I accepted.

But that's not the end of it. I actually took the time to write a note to say that I had in fact slashed my friend's list in two but...and here's the clincher...he wasn't one that I cut and I'm not sure what happened.

Doh! Total Homer Simpson moment I know but come on! I felt really bad. And I really am a good person at heart and at the end of the day, I really don't know how to hurt people. And he actually noticed, unlike the other 212 so why not throw him a bone huh?

So, I told a little white lie. Sue me. (Don't really -- I'm pretty broke.)

So, other than that little snag, the day went pretty well Facebookingly speaking. And you know, the strength that I gained from turning my back on something that keeps 5.7% of the world's population busy every day, also helped me do something else I'd been thinking of doing for a while.

I changed my computer's homepage from ninemsn.com to Google. Why you ask? Because frankly, I just got tired of getting on the internet every day, as much as I do, and seeing the latest horrific headline(s). I actually tried to look up a homepage that was centered around good world news, and you guessed it, they don't exist as far as I know. Sex and bad news are neck and neck for capturing reader's attention.

I guess I'm going about news the same way some people get criticized for going about politics...with apathy. But it's not that I'm apathetic to the woes of the world, I just can't take one more reminder about what a sorry state our world, and our humans for that matter, are in.

And if you must know, I'm quite enjoying my little sabaticle from the gossip mongers and sensationlist journalism that were so a part of my life just five short days ago.
