The Cast Of Buffy - Where Are They Now? The Scoobies.

April 29th 2008 00:22
Sarah Michelle-Gellar – Buffy Summers

Since leaving Buffy, Sarah’s career has continued to be quite varied. She has provided voice-overs on The Simpsons, fellow Buffy regular Seth Green’s animated series Robot Chicken, the long-delayed Happily N'Ever After, providing the voice of Cinderella and the CG Animation TMNT. Gellar reprised her role of Daphne in the Scooby Doo sequel and went on to scare the pants off us in the American remake of the Japanese horror film Ju-On: The Grudge - known just as The Grudge for the Western audience - and had a cameo performance in its follow up, the oh so cleverly named The Grudge 2. Another horror/thriller which wasn’t quite as successful was The Return.

In 2006, Sarah stepped completely out of her clean-cut image starring as an ex-porn star in Richard Kelly’s follow up to Donnie Darko, the dystopian Southland Tales. The movie had to be almost completely re-edited after being savaged by critics in its original format and was a huge box office failure with many saying the movie was too confusing.

Sarah’s next role was also controversial. Playing Alex Baldwin’s love interest in the movie Suburban Girl, adapted from the best selling novel The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing, the film caused a stir because of the large age gap of approximately 19 years.

Gellar’s latest release was in January 2008 with an ensemble cast including Brendan Fraser and Kevin Bacon in The Air That I Breathe. The concept of the film is based around a Chinese proverb which breaks life into four intertwined emotions; Sarah plays Sorrow. 2008 is set to be a busy year for Gellar with another remake of a popular Asian horror film, Possession, due to be released and a drama, Veronika Decides to Die set to start filming in May. Sarah has also provided the voice for yet another animated film, Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey slated for release in December 2009. She also has her name attached to a couple of other films still in the development stage.

Sarah Michelle is also one of the faces of Maybelline and has featured in a number of their major advertising campaigns. She has been married to fellow actor (and sometimes co-star) Freddie Prinze Jr since 2002 and officially changed her surname to Prinze in late 2007.

Alyson Hannigan – Willow Rosenberg

Alyson has continued her career in TV and movies and in 2004 added theatre to her resume after making her stage debut in the West End stage adaptation of When Harry Met Sally opposite Luke Perry. She has guest starred on a number of TV shows including a recurring role in Veronica Mars – a show that ironically Joss Whedon said was so good he wished he had written it - and the film Date Movie. She also provided the voice of Hottie Penguin in the mockumentary Farce of The Penguins. Hannigan is now currently starring in TV’s How I Met Your Mother as the character Lily Aldrin.
She has been married to former co-star of Buffy, Alexis Denisof (Wesley Wyndam-Pryce) since 2003.

Nicholas Brendon – Xander Harris

After Buffy, Brendan slipped back into relative obscurity starring in a few made for TV movies, Celeste in the City, Relative Chaos and Fire Serpent. He also guest starred in a number of TV shows, with a recurring role in Kitchen Confidential. His latest forays into movies have been Unholy, Blood on the Highway and the yet to be released The Portal. He has most recently guest starred in TV’s Criminal Minds.

Nicholas married actress / writer Tressa di Figlia in 2001.

Anthony Head – Rupert Giles

After leaving Buffy, Anthony moved back to his native England where he performed on stage in short runs of Peter Pan and The Pirates of Penzance. He also played the Prime Minister of England in the hit comedy Little Britain. Head has also guest starred in many TV shows with Doctor Who and Monarch of the Glen probably being the most well known outside of Britain, most of the other roles have been in shows that are popular in the UK but not so well in the rest of the world.

He is currently in production of a new BBC series titled Merlin which has recently been picked up by an American Network. Head is a musician as well as an actor and played the role of Frank ‘N’ Furter in a Rocky Horror tribute show in 2006. Anthony Head has also released an album 'Music for Elevators' .A collaborative project with electronic producer/composer George Sarah. He describes it on his website as having a subtle electronic feel. He is married to Sarah Fisher and has two daughters.

Charisma Carpenter – Cordelia Chase

Charisma’s character of Cordelia moved from Buffy to the spin off show Angel. After completing Angel she posed for a Playboy magazine pictorial and featured on the cover. In keeping with her supernatural character of Buffy and Angel she then went on to guest star as a seer in the series Charmed. Carpenter has had guest roles in a number of TV shows, the longest running and most notable since the demise of Angel being, like Alyson Hannigan, on Veronica Mars. She has also appeared in a few made for television movies, one of which being Relative Chaos with former Buffy co-star Nicholas Brandon.

Carpenter is married to Damien Hardy and has a son Donovan who she gave birth to during her time on Angel.

Seth Green – Daniel “Oz” Osbourne

I could (and might) write an entire blog on everything that Seth Green has been up to since his stint on Buffy playing cool dude / musician / werewolf Oz as he was my favourite character. Seth is one very busy boy. He has appeared in a number of films including The Italian Job, Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed and The Best Man. He has guest starred in TV shows such as That 70s Show, Mad TV, Will & Grace and recently had a very memorable and messy role in Grey’s Anatomy.

Seth also provides the voice for the character Chris Griffin in Family Guy and also for characters in the Emmy award winning Robot Chicken, a stop motion animation series that he co-created with Matthew Senreich. The production company Stoop!d Monkey, which was formed by Seth and Matthew in 2005, also co-produces the series. I have to say that Robot Chicken is one of my favourite shows and if you haven’t seen it then I suggest you check out the Adult Swim website and take a look. A number of previous Buffy cast, among other very recognisable names, provide voices for the series. The Star Wars special is hilarious and a must for all fans.

Seth has two films in the works, The Brazilian Job – which I hope is a sequel to The Italian Job and not a movie about waxing – and Old Dogs. He is reportedly single at the moment. If you’re reading this and you like older women, Seth, will you marry me? Although then I would have to give up on my enormous crush on Joss Whedon.

Emma Caulfield – Anya Jenkins / Anyanka

Emma has done very little in the way of acting since Buffy ended. She has stated that it is something she does not want to do for the rest of her life. She has a degree in psychology which will probably come in quite handy when she considers career alternatives in the future. In 2004 she co-produced the improvisational film Bandwagon. She has starred in three TV movies, I Want to Marry Ryan Banks, In Her Mother’s Footsteps and most recently A Valentine Carol and the short film Hollow. She has also provided voices for the animated series Robot Chicken.

Emma has two films in production, Timer and Why Am I Doing This?

There is very little info on Emma but she does blog on her myspace page. She is married (eloped) and although she has posted pictures of her husband I have no idea who he is other than by his myspace identity. Feel free to leave a comment to enlighten everyone if you know his name.

Amber Benson – Tara Maclay

Amber is carving out a career in writing, film directing and film producing while continuing her acting. After Buffy, Benson began production on a series of animations for the BBC with co-creator Christopher Golden, Ghosts of Albion: Legacy and its sequels.
In 2006 she released her second independent feature film Lovers, Liars and Lunatics through her own production company, Benson Entertainment. She wrote, directed and starred in the film.

Amber is also a writer of novels and comic books. She has collaborated on a few Buffy themed comics with writer Christopher Golden and with artist Jamie McKelvie on a short story within the Image Comics collection Four Letter Worlds. Benson has also collaborated with artist Ben Templesmith on Demon Father John’s Pinwheel Blues published as a four-part split-book, Shadowplay.

Benson and Golden have also written two supernatural thrillers: Ghosts of Albion: Accursed and Ghosts of Albion: Witcher based on the BBC animations mentioned above. They have since released yet another collaboration, the novella The Seven Whistlers. Late in 2007 Benson signed a three-book deal with Penguin Books.

Benson has had guest roles on a number of TV shows including Cold Case and Supernatural. She has also appeared in a few not very notable films such as Tripping Forward, Girltrash! and Kiss the Bride. She has a number of upcoming films, unfortunately they all look a little dodgy.

Marc Blucas – Riley Finn

The former basketballer has made a few movies since exiting Buffy the most famous of which would be starring with Gwyneth Paltrow in View from the Top and opposite Katie Holmes in First Daughter. His most recent films include the thriller The Killing Floor and the chick flick The Jane Austen Book Club. He also had a guest appearance on the TV show House.

Marc has two films currently in production, another thriller Animals and a Sci-Fi comedy starring Eddie Murphy called Meet Dave.

The last info I have on his status is that he is dating Mary Parent, Executive VP of Production for Universal Studios but I don’t know if that information is current.

Michelle Trachtenberg – Dawn Summers

After Buffy, Michelle returned to film in the comedy movie EuroTrip, and also also had a recurring role in Six Feet Under. She then played the title character in the Disney film Ice Princess with Kim Cattrall. In a funny twist, she played a character named Willow in an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. She has also featured in a number of music videos, one being a clip for Fall out Boy’s song “This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" with former Buffy co-star Seth Green. Trachtenberg also provided the voice of Tika for the animated movie Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight.

Michelle is starring alongside Zac Efron in 17 Again which will be released in August 2008. A comedy / drama, Kids in America, is also slated for release in 2008. She also has two drama films in post-production stage, against The Current and The Circuit.

Eliza Dushku – Faith Lehane

Eliza also made the jump from a recurring role in Buffy to a recurring role in Angel before appearing in the horror flick Wrong Turn and the indie comedy/drama The Kiss. She then went on to star in her own TV Series Tru Calling which ran for two seasons.

Dushku also starred in an off-Broadway production entitled Dog Sees God. She quit along with several other members of the cast under controversial circumstances. She has also voiced a character for the Playstation game Yakuza and appeared in a couple of music videos.

Her most recent forays into film have been the critically acclaimed Nobel Son alongside Bill Pullman and Alan Rickman and Sex and Breakfast an R-rated movie starring with Macaulay Culkin where young couples experiment with anonymous sex. She was also the lead in the recent film The Alphabet Killer.

Dushku has a number of projects on the boil including two new thrillers, Open Graves and The Thacker Case. She is also providing the voice of a character in the upcoming animated film Noah's Ark: The New Beginning. But the most exciting news has to be that Eliza has teamed up again with Joss Whedon in his new Sci-Fi TV series Dollhouse which has just started production. Many of the writers from Buffy are also working on this series. I can’t wait to see what it’s like.

Stayed tuned, in the next couple of days I will be posting about the vamps and bad guys of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Hi Kleonaptra, thanks for the positive feedback, it did take quite a bit of research but I'm a huge fan too so it was fun. I've almost finished my post on the vamps so I hope you come back for that one.

It's amazing how many people still love it after all this time!

I remember the girl that played dawn on Six Feet Under, she played a bratty pop star and I think Keith was her bodyguard.

Looks like some are doing better than others.

I can't believe how much that Xander guy has changed. I must be one of the few people in the world who was never into Buffy - but then I had a very instant dislike towards SMG - don't ask me why.

Hi Johnny

Michelle Trachtenberg was good in Six Feet Under and also in the Law and Order episode. She was really bratty in both. Typecasting maybe? Dawn was a brat in Buffy as well.

I agree Aimzster, he has changed so much! He was probably just very young when he started, he had that boy next door look. Not so much any more.

I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is either loved or hated with no in betweens. You don't seem to be alone in your opinion, I know a few people who find her intensely irritating. I loved her character so I guess I'm one of the other camp

Anonymous, yes Eliza is pretty gorgeous.

its funny how you never hear about sarah michelle geller and freddy prinz jnrs relationship or see them as a couple in public

I wonder if it's because they don't really like being in the spotlight or it's just that they are homebodies that never go out. I just think popularity wise they've kind of fallen off the ladder and public interest in them as a couple just isn't really there. Interesting observation though.

Hi Cheryl, great post! Being the obsessive fan I am, I noticed a couple of things that might need updating:

-Charisma Carpenter split from her husband late last year
-She also had a spot on Back To You (apparently)

Incidentally, her little boy is sooo cute! Have you watched the Angel 100th ep celebration on the dvd? He was on the set that day. Such a cutie.

Guess what? I met Nicholas Brendon!!!! At Supernova last year in Sydney I got a photo!!! He hugged me!!! I swear to God I couldn't stop shaking for like half and hour after that lol. Good times.

Thanks for the update! This is exactly what I was hoping for, someone that could either corroborate the stuff I'd researched or come up with better and more correct info. Well done to you Mandy.

So you met Xander? Cool! I missed the convention, I had no idea it was on until it was gone. You should post your pic!! He was always such a crack up.

Hey thanks Bianca.

I haven't seen Gossip Girls, I'm guessing it's on cable and I'm too poor to have cable haha. Good update though.

I'm still finishing off the next part of this. There were just way too many vamps and villains on Buffy. LOTS of research But it is on its way.

Cheryl, this is amazing! Thank you so very much for the update. I am yet another huge fan of Buffy (it was, is and always will be in my top 3 TV series) and this info brought back memories. I came across a quick analysis on Buffy at Film Banana (For those interested, the article is here) today and watched one of my favorite episodes "Hush" afterwards but seeing this, I get a feeling that the Universe is nudging me to do a Buffy marathon...

Once again, thank you for providing the info. Looking forward to possible updates.

Hehe,
I think 'Hush' is a fave of everyones....Thats what I call real art in the form of media. I watched 'smashed' last night - one of my faves, for THE SINGLE greatest sex scene ever shot!

Thanks Ayda

Now you have to tell us what your other two favourite shows are. My top 3 would have to be Dexter, Buffy and a tie for third with Heroes and Firefly. I know that sounds like cheating but I can't choose!

Hush was a piece of brilliance, as Kleo says it is real art.

And hey Kleo, that sex scene is brilliant although I have to say I'm glad it's not like that in real life, I'd hate to have to replace the walls and floors for every bit of nookie, not to mention the bruising...

Building was structurally unsound - it was coming down anyway! And slayers and vamps heal quick - Im sure its a whole other definition of 'rough'!
