The Burning Season

October 12th 2008 09:46
As part of the Future Makers series, ABC1 presents this revolutionary documentary touted as the follow-up film to Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth.

Each year, there is a burning season in Indonesia. Rainforests are cut down and burnt every hour to clear land for crops such as palm oil, making Indonesia the third largest producer of carbon emissions in the world. Indonesian palm oil farmer Achmadi confronts the impact of his deliberately lit fires on climate change: what is he to do when this is the only income he knows? In nearby Borneo, Danish-born Lone Droscher-Nielsen rescues and cares for the hundreds of orangutans devastated by these very fires. Lone's goal is to find forest areas that are safe from logging and burning and return the rehabilitated orangutans to the wild.

As the world faces up to the impacts of climate change, a young environmental entrepreneur, Dorjee Sun, proposes a massive carbon trading deal that could protect the forests of Indonesia, save the orangutan from extinction, and affect the Earth’s future.
The Burning Season looks at solutions to climate change. At the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali, Dorjee relentlessly pursues his deal. Does his concept offer new hope to the remaining forests of the world and the earth's climate? Met with a mixture of surprise, intrigue, confusion and scepticism in a period of four months, Dorjee's proposal is rejected 203 times. Dorjee however, won't give up on his quest. He re-works his proposal and pitches it in London, the carbon capital of the world. He finally finds a receptive partner in one of the world's largest banks, Merrill Lynch.

The Burning Season asks is he a pioneer or a profiteer? Does his concept offer new hope for the climate, and the world's remaining forests?

"Every year, there is one outstanding documentary that you cannot miss...That people will talk about because of its significance to the planet's future...This coming year, 'The Burning Season' is that documentary." - Hugh Jackman

This is a bit dear to my heart as one of my friends, NICOLETTE BOAZ, composed the music for a TV hour and a feature length version of The Burning Season. She put her blood, sweat and tears into it (also a few other friends performed the music). I hope you will take the time to watch.

Even if you are a global warming / climate change non-believer, these orangutans are in grave danger. Set aside your reservations and watch...you never know, it may just change your mind.

The Burning Season screens on ABC1 at 8.30pm on Tuesday 14 October.
