Australian Bush Poem

July 19th 2010 02:19

So since my husband and I have moved to Australia, we have spent more than half the time here living in the bush. The beauty of the landscape and wildlife is remarkable and awe-inspiring.

I wrote this poem while living up north on a large property near Charters Towers. I hope you all enjoy it
.

Cockatoos fly overhead, plovers run the ground.
Geckos chirp from somewhere hid, while ants steadily build their mounds.

Butterflies flap their delicate wings, searching for nectar sweet.
Ducks and cranes commune together on nearly every creek.

Magpies swoop and clack their beaks when little ones are near.
Jack Jack’s hang about like hobos, and I’ve even seen some deer.

Feral pigs run in mobs with tusks razor sharp;
Dingoes roam and look for prey in the safety of the dark.

Snakes slither frighteningly close, through grass you cannot see.
Dragonflies whir around in groups, dancing through the trees.

Green frogs come at night to feed on bugs from our window ledge.
Cane toads’ heads poke up from the grass, ‘til my husband grabs the wedge.

Kangaroos bounce here and there on legs made of steel.
Their droppings scattered ‘round the yard make their presence all more real.

Willy Wagtails wag their bums and flitter to and fro.
While crows squawk and carry on to establish them as foe.

Kookaburras chatter from the trees and join each other in chorus.

I run to find out where they are like some nerdy Yankee tourist.

Bugs of all sorts creep and crawl, indoors as well as out.
Flies are swatted, mozzies squashed; they’re all evil, I have no doubt.

Floods come and rains do not cease, during the wet that has no shame.
We’re stuck inside with just one channel, watching a stupid cricket game.

Sunsets come with a colourful fury to bring the day to close,
The stars light up the western sky in beautiful astral light shows.

Land and air, sun and sky, of this we are all a part,
The Bush is home not only to live, but also in the heart.

Zen thought for the day:
"In true dialogue, both sides are willing to change.” -Thich Nhat Hanh
