Actors from the 80s - Now McDreamy, McCrazy and McWTF?!

March 31st 2008 04:59
TV pretty much sucks, there is not much on of any interest, although I am pleased for the return of McDreamy. Sad but true. Oh come on, he's hot! I still think it's hilarious because for those of you who are old enough to remember his movies from the 80s, he was such a dork. And who couldn't like a show with characters like McDreamy, McSteamy and McVet. Although my favourite character is Cristina, she's such a McBitch, I can relate.

Well Patrick Dempsey, that brings up an interesting topic - male movie stars from the eighties. Let's play whatever happened to?

Hmm, Matthew Broderick. Who didn't love 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'? He was also dorky and quirky, but now looks like any other middle aged man. He was great in Election with Reece Witherspoon and had an uncanny resemblance to Inspector Gadget but hasn't really made any very successful movies of late. He is married to Sarah Jessica Parker and does very well on Broadway (ooh George Benson just popped into my head then).

Emilio Estevez, one of the original brat pack, is now mostly known as Charlie Sheen's brother. Now THAT is sad.

Rob Lowe. OK, he's still gorgeous and The West Wing was not the same without him. I’m still trying to forgive him for starring in that horrible neurotic soap opera that is Brothers and Sisters. Rob...step back away from the dark side. Now if they could get Rob on Grey’s Anatomy I could die happy. He could be McYummy.

Dr Rob McScrumptious

Tom Cruise. I would say borderline nutcase but I'm afraid he jumped the fence over the border when he jumped the on the couch and is now a fully fledged citizen and possibly messiah of the land of Odd. After all the Church of Scientology has been quoted as saying that he is like the modern day version of Jesus. Does that mean his followers will become Cruisetions? We could start a whole blog an the names of churches he could be head of; The Church Of Cruise, Tom Cruise and the Church of the Latter Day Whackos, The Cruise-sofa Witnesses, The Branch Tomidiots, Tomsong, I could go on and on with this one.

Robert Downey Jr. Kids, just say no. The poster child for out of control well before Paris and Lindsay tried to make rehab a fashion statement. Although who didn't love him in Ally McBeal and he was superb in Zodiac.

John Cusack. He has managed to keep his movie career alive and kicking and is doing just as well now as he did in the 80s. He is still quirky and remains a favourite with both men and women as a slightly off-centre leading man. He has been pretty consistent starring in a few duds but some really memorable roles over the years. Gross Point Blank and High Fidelity are right up there on my faves list. He’s very boring in the sense that he hasn’t had ridiculous plastic surgery, doesn’t seem to get himself arrested and hasn’t tried to become the messiah. Come on John, step up!

Keifer Sutherland
. Made the hugely successful jump to TV with 24 but has also made a highly successful fall into prison after driving with a blood alcohol limit that probably closely resembled the name of his hit show.

Kevin Bacon. Seems to be working steadily but mostly with very B-Grade movies so you could be forgiven for thinking that he disappeared a few years ago. Once everyone was Footloose now he seems to be most famous for the ‘Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon’ game which is hilarious because even I can link myself to him easily and I've never acted a day in my life (unless you count acting like an idiot, then I'd win an Oscar).

Mickey Rourke. He now looks like one of Madame Tussauds' wax models that someone left leaning against the kettle while making a cup of tea. I think he goes to the same plastic surgeon as Michael Jackson.

I'm so hot...

...I'm melting!

How is it Patrick Dempsey just got so damn hot over the past 20 years? Damn, all I got was wrinkles and love handles.

Hi Ruby

They would come to your door in pairs brandishing copies of Couchtower Magazine, for men that are so uncomfortable being short they have to stand on furniture.

Mickey Rourke looks f&*(#d up -- how has he managed to do that to his face? Is it a facelift?

I think it was MEANT to be a facelift but I'm guessing it was done by a the doctor's receptionist who had been sniffing those white board markers and really hated Mickey Rourke movies. Eeek!

Hi Cheryl,

The one actor I am always surprised never made it through to the other side was the uber talented Timothy Hutton (Falcon and the Snowman, Taps, Ordinary People) I think Playing God was his last quality film I saw him in before he went straight to video. I suspect he didn't want to play the hollywood game.

Mickey Rourke's face actually got mangled when he turned his back on the film industry and returned to his first love as a pro boxer.

Though his KO record wasn't bad the damage done was enough so that even under a surgeons blade his handsome profile was lost. Agreed he now looks like road kill, but I think it adds to his onscreen presence. Since he returned to acting in the late 90's I have loved him in Buffallo 66, The Pledge, Thursday and Animal factory.

As for the pack, Emilio's directorial effort Bobby was worthy of merit.

Kevin Bacon most recently astounded in The Woodsman and Where the Truth Lies, both brilliant character roles that defy his public image and prove his skill.

Broderick has come along way from his Bueller days, i loved him in Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues and would have killed to see him on stage in the Producers...shame about the film.

Keifer used to be such an interesting one of a kind presence in films like The Killing Time, Stand By me and Lost Boys...now they have homogenized him to the point where he is downright boring. A tragedy for such a talent.

Downey Jnr has never swayed in my eyes, always a quality performer regardless of personal issues. From Less than Zero and Chaplin to Zodiac, a gifted chameleon.

John Cusack, what can I say? I'm a huge fan and he continues to effortlessly tackle challenging parts like Hitler's art dealer in Max.

I used to be a Dempsey fan back in the day just because he played vulnerable with such ease...can't stand Grey's Anatomy so haven't seen much of him lately.

For me Cruise peaked with the Outsiders and Taps, now he just plays himself on film and its downright unwatchable.

Fun post.

I must admit I haven’t heard anything really on Timothy Hutton for a while. The most recent role I know about was in the indie film Stephanie Daley. I hope it is because that's what he has chosen because I agree he is a tremendous talent but that has never stopped Hollywood putting people on the scrapheap before.

Emilio has always been better on the other side of the camera. He wrote Bobby as well as directing it and I still have a soft spot for his earlier work.

Kiefer was somebody who broke the mould a little I think and yes it is a shame that they have packaged him in a neat little box now. I did love the first season of 24 because it was a new and interesting concept for TV that was well written, well acted and held dramatic tension but then it started following a formula and never really excited me again.

Robert Downey Jr will always be a spectacular talent despite, or maybe because of, the problems in his personal life. I could watch him in anything.

Tom Cruise has been in a few good movies but he as an actor is not ever what makes them good films. They would have been good if almost anyone with a modicum of talent replaced him.

Thanks for the fabulous comment.

Hey, C'mon give Mickey a break.

The dude gave up acting to be a pro boxer!
That takes guts.
And face...

I think poor Mickey would have looked better with a boxer's face, it would have added more character.

You just reminded me that I forgot Michael J Fox! I just read an interview he did in December where he made the comment "I can’t always control my body the way I want to, and I can’t control when I feel good or when I don’t. I can control how clear my mind is. And I can control how willing I am to step up if somebody needs me."

Michael, you are an inspiration. Thanks for reminding me that we choose how we deal with things regardless of circumstances.

For me, when I think boys of the 80's........it's Judd Nelson. Of course that's solely for his turn in The Breakfast Club. It's amazing that 20 yrs on, his character is still cool.......and hot!

Rob Lowe was so good in The West Wing......I loved him in that show.

Hi James

I love a good twisted movie and that is one I never tire of. I really like clever writing and dialogue and Gross Point Blank is sharp as a tack.

Hi Kylie

Judd really was The Breakfast Club wasn't he? He still looks every bit the cool dude he was back then.
